A thought piece on fashion as art.
The MET GALA dress code this year is Fashion is Art, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Where did we decide that fashion could not be art? I’m not sure why that has to be the case. By all definitions, fashion is art in that it is an expression of the person; it is visually compelling, interesting, and beautiful; and it evokes a response by those viewing it. Fashion, especially the couture of Paris and the handmade from around the world, is created through skill, craftsmanship, design aesthetic, personal intuition, and artistry. Much of the same goes into what is classified as art.
Yet, fashion is not always in the same room as art when it comes to appreciation and valuation.
A painting may go for millions while a gown may go for thousands.
A picture is a still image, one that is created by an artist, evokes emotion in the viewer, is appreciated, and tells a story (by creation, and in interpretation).
A couture look is a 3-dimensional piece, it is created with skill, beloved by the wearer, and it tells a story (both in creation and in expression).
Art is personal.
Fashion is subjective.
Art is seen as intellectual.
Fashion is seen as trendy.
